The story — Marrakech Museum
The Marrakech Museum is housed in the Dar Menebhi palace, a lavish residence built in the late 19th century for Mehdi Menebhi, a minister of Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz.
Restored by the Omar Benjelloun Foundation, the palace opened as a museum in 1997. Its great courtyard became a covered hall with a huge brass chandelier at its centre, framed by carved plaster arches and multicoloured zellige tiles, while the old hammam keeps its star-pierced domes.
The rooms alternate manuscripts, ceramics, jewellery and weapons with temporary shows of contemporary Moroccan art. Located on Place Ben Youssef next to the famous madrasa, the museum is the ideal starting point for exploring the northern medina.
