The story — Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

About four hours by train from Marrakech, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI) is worth the trip to the capital. Inaugurated in 2014, it was the first major national museum built in Morocco since independence to international standards, and is run by the National Museums Foundation.

Its galleries show the pioneers of Moroccan painting — Jilali Gharbaoui, Ahmed Cherkaoui, Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Melehi and Chaïbia Tallal — alongside major international exhibitions.

It rounds off any cultural tour of Morocco after the museums of Marrakech, and stands near Rabat-Ville station, not far from the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.
